At the Edge of the Abyss - Commemorative Lecture

Presented by the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre with the Centre for Jewish Studies, University of Toronto Sponsored by the Esther Bem Memorial Fund at the Jewish Foundation

David Koker’s diary, published this winter as At the Edge of the Abyss: A Concentration Camp Diary 1943-1944, is a rare account of life in a German concentration camp written by a Jew during the Holocaust. On Sunday, January 29, audiences joined the Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre at U of T’s Munk Centre for a commemorative lecture from professors Robert Jan van Pelt and Michiel Horn as they explored the diary and traced Koker’s evolution as a writer and poet through his rescued writings. The diary’s English-language editors and translators, Pelt and Horn captivated the audience with their depth of knowledge and personal insight into the remarkable diary; copies of the book sold out in one hour.
