At the turn of the 20th century, various Jewish fraternal societies, known as
landsmanschaften, were established upon the arrival of Eastern European Jews to assist their brethren integrate into the Toronto Jewish community. Many of the societies were named for the towns in Eastern Europe from which they emigrated.
